Blowing the dust off the old Buffalo masters has revealed seven unheard The Phoenix Foundation tracks from 2010, an added bonus to the exciting news of the Buffalo 10 Year Anniversary Edition, set for release on the 5th of June. ‘Danzig Bro’ is the first of the weekly vintage singles to see the light of day, a poignant 10-minute dirge and something of a dedication to the band’s collective love for musclebound US songwriter Glenn Danzig. Puzzlingly referred to by The Phoenix Foundation as “a meandering, mesmerising trip to frozen banana land”and featuring repeated lyric “people come to shoot the freak, frozen banana for a treat”, the song seems to have a cryptic allusion to North American beach-side attractions Shoot The Freak and frozen banana stands.

A curious fact, considering the Coney Island Shoot The Freak game opened in 2002 according to this New York Times article from 2008, more specifically July 2002 as recorded in this News Day piece. All things considered, the factual inaccuracy in its lyrics [perhaps this gaffe was why it wasn’t included on the album? – Ed.] should in no way affect the shimmering beauty of ‘Danzig Bro’…
